Boost your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE)

If you’d asked me several years ago about how important walking is I probably would have disregarded it and said to just focus on your training and more traditional forms of cardio e.g. running/cycling. However, your Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) contributes more to your daily calorie expenditure (& your fat loss results!) than your intense gym workouts!!

NEAT is essentially anything you burn through your movement outside of your workouts like walking, climbing stairs, doing laundry etc. If your goal is fat loss, it could be as simple as setting a step goal to see the results you want.

Here are some ways for you to easily increase your step count

  • Set goals
No one likes to fail so setting a target of 8-12k steps per day encourages you to get moving.
  • Walk & talk
If you need to make a phone call or reply to emails, go for a walk at the same time.
  • Park further away
Simple but effective, if you get into the habit of parking on the opposite side of the car park to the supermarket/your work/gym etc, these extra steps will rack up massively over time!
  • Take your coffee catch ups or meetings outside
Instead of sitting down in a coffee shop, go outside and catch up whilst upping your steps at the same time.
  • Make the most of your lunch break
If like me, you work indoors more often than not, go for a 30-40 min walk. It clears my head and makes me more productive in the afternoon
Do not underestimate the power of walking
